[RECAP] Season 10, Episode 3 of The Walking Dead, "Ghosts"

Care of Entertainment Weekly
The third installment of Season 10, entitled “Ghosts” was an aptly titled episode that explored the psyches of various characters that are still being haunted by the memories of their loved ones (actually the episode could’ve been called “I’m So Tired” but that’s another story and resonates a little too close to home so whatever). But more importantly, these characters are being haunted by their lack of action and how that “sin of omission” might have potentially cost them their loved ones. We see this emotional and soulful exploration through Siddiq, Aaron and most notably Carol, who’s pill addiction, and lack of sleep, allow us to explore the deep recesses of her mind.

The episode revolves around the fact that all of our characters have had their inhibitions severely lowered by the fact that they have been fighting off a significant wave of walkers that was so large in scale, it took them over four days to ward off the threat. Their lack of sleep for days has caused many to be on edge and not hesitate in expressing their feelings, similar to when one is drunk (as Eugene says, “A drunk mind speaks a sober heart”). Sadly, Rosita’s frank honesty doesn’t sit well with Eugene who is coldly and cruelly rebuked by Rosita, after being more of a father to her child than Siddiq or Father Gabriel, clearly. Personally, I have a feeling that this is all occurring to prepare Eugene emotionally for venturing off to uncover WHO is on the other side of that ham radio (no relationship, no children, no problem right?).  But we’ll have to wait and see how all that progresses. Buck up Eugene! There’s a big (albeit horrific) world out there!

Concurrently, we have Aaron who apparently is still grappling with the death of his husband, Eric (wow, there’s a name we haven’t heard in some time right?). In this episode, he is tasked to help take out any of the lingering walker herd beyond the fences of Alexandria but unfortunately he happens to be low on fighters. Against both of their preferences, Father Gabriel orders for Negan and Aaron to work together to clear out any lingering threats so for better or worse, they are stuck together (like peanut butter and jelly).

Side Note: How cool are Aaron’s metal attachment arms? Commercially speaking, you could have an Aaron action figure with interchangeable arms couldn’t you? Just saying...

In any case, during this time in the wild, fighting walkers, Negan tries to prove to Aaron that he is no longer a threat to him and our heroes, as proven by his continued cooperation all these years (particularly in recent years by saving Judith’s life during the winter storm). Negan explains to him during a one to one confrontation at night that, at the time, he did what he needed to do to protect his people because as a man, when you don’t protect what’s yours, it’ll soon become someone else’s.  Aaron then emotionally asks him if he means that ultimately it’s his fault that Eric is dead, to which Negan remains silent.

That interaction is essentially the crutch of episode: Many of our characters are grappling with the feeling that because they didn’t protect what was there’s, they ultimately lost it in some way, shape or form (basically via death).

In the case of Aaron and Negan, though, Aaron has a moment of clarity the next day (literally) after temporary blindness due to an interaction with a hogwood covered walker. He awakens to see that Negan actually kept watch and protected Aaron all evening from any threats while he slept and recovered.  He finally truly sees the real Negan in front of him (finally, geez).

Siddiq however, seems to, understably be suffering from a MAJOR case of post tramautic stress disorder (PTSD). As many would recall, Siddiq was IN the shed when so many of our heroes were brutally murdered and decapitated by Alpha and the Whisperers. As such, it seems that certain words and/or objects will trigger flashback memories of that fateful evening. During a town hall meeting where individuals are demanding justice for their fallen friends and retribution for the waves of walkers being sent to them, we see one of these moments. At even the mention of the heads on the pikes, this immediately incites an almost visceral reaction from Siddiq, so much so that he needs to excuse himself.

This does not go by unnoticed by Michonne or Dante, the new doctor who we later find out was a former army medic in the Iraq War.  Also, SPOILER ALERT, Dante WILL be a MAJOR player later on in our storyline...but in what way exactly?  Check out comicbook.com's description of the addition of Dante and his potentially controversal role to play in TWD universe.

In any case, he talks about his own experience with PTSD after experiencing the loss of his entire squad during the war and returning to civilian life in the US. He does this to make Siddiq feel comfortable to share his own experience and know he’s not alone, except...we never get to hear anything more from Siddiq.

Which begs the question: How much did Siddiq ACTUALLY see when he was held by the Whisperers that night?  WHY was he elected to be the ONLY survivor?  And what was his level of involvement that night?  Is his trauma and pain solely from witnessing the death of his friends?  Or is his trauma also stemming from guilt over cowardly inaction...or worse, participation in the mass murders?

Finally, we get to Carol, who in this episode comes face to face with Alpha, during a prearranged meeting at the pike border. Before heading to this meeting, we see that Carol retains a secretly concealed shot gun in her pants and is also taking some medication that one can assume to be some sort of stimulant that allows her focus and forgo sleep (potentially Adderall). Once at the border, all the memories of Henry and that day come flooding back and she cannot hold back when Alpha demands that they vacate certain pieces of land as the NEW border. In a moment of defiance, she confronts Alpha’s threats as a bunch of BS, which prompts Alpha to bring up her son Henry’s last words before he was decapitated. That’s all it takes for Carol to take aim and fire at Alpha, before Michonne slaps the gun away, narrowly avoiding a bloody conflict.

Care of Bustle.com
What follows is an evening in hiding from the Whisperers in an abandoned school until daytime, inter-spliced with drug infused hallucinations from Carol that at times, makes it rather difficult to understand what is a figment of her imagination and what is actually happening. What we come to realize, via various hallucinations, is that Carol is still haunted by the death of ALL her children, not just Henry (case in point, the Home Education notebook with the likenesses of ALL the children she’s lost during the duration of the apocalypse).  She has moments where she finds herself wandering the halls of the school, thinking that she sees Henry calling out to her by saying “mom”, only to realize that it’s all a drug and insomnia induced hallucination. This makes it all the more jarring when we realize that Carol actually IS right to be on high alert because in fact, at least ONE whisperer DID infiltrate the school (after all, they ARE always watching) and her moment in the gymnasium hanging by one foot from a trap was very REAL one. Which makes it even more shocking/amazing when she is able to singlehandedly slice off the rope and free herself and then apparently kill every walker that entered the gym (all by her lonesome).

By the time, Daryl, Michonne and the crew find her, she has a horrible wound on her arm from a piece of broken glass that likely punctured her when she freed herself from the hanging trap. It’s during her recovering sleep time at Alexandria, after being stitched up, that she finally SLEEPS, after who knows how long of going without.  It’s at this point that we have yet another dream sequence where Carol wakes up in the same home but far more nicely decorated.  She comes downstairs to more cleaned up Daryl cooking breakfast and giving her money (how weird to see money in this world right?).

So, let’s talk about this: A dream that’s a screenshot of domestic bliss, complete with breakfast, Henry at the table...but with DARYL as the male patriarch figure? This was pretty surprising to me, downright jarring and shocking, considering Carol spent YEARS with King Ezekiel raising Henry as THEIR son. So for Ezekiel to not even be a blip on the radar throughout our journey through the deeper recesses of Carol’s mind, is VERY telling.

So does this mean that Daryl is probably the closest person to her?  Yes. Does this mean that Carol probably loves Daryl?  Yes. But does this mean that there are CONFIRMED romantic feelings between Carol and Daryl (or from Carol towards Daryl, at the very least)? The jury is still out on that one...we have to remember that it WAS just a dream after all, a dream that came after coming off of a drug addiction (for all intensive purposes) and a lack of sleeping for days. So I’m not ready to say that there’s something brewing here...not YET, at least.

The dream sequence though was effective in illustrating the depth of Carol's love for Daryl and, as expected, the internet lost its collective s&*t when this all played out on screen.  No surprise there.

Eventually though, Carol wakes up to her TRUE reality which is a life without Henry or any of her children for that matter.  She eventually confronts Daryl to see if he truly believes her account of everything that transpired back in the school and he does indeed believe her (despite the pills, despite the hallucinations).  And he is right to believe her because it turns out that everything that occurred in the gym, really DID happen and we flash to that scene of ALL the dead walkers singlehandedly killed by Carol (again, impressive as hell)...and how apparently she did end up shooting that Whisperer that lead her into the gym.  After some time on the ground, we then see this shot-in-the-gut Whisperer open their eyes...and we presume reanimate.

So what’s going to happen after Alpha and the Whisperers realize that one of their own was shot and killed by Carol? She DID try firing at Alpha after all. Will they look at this as a sign of a aggression and retaliate? AGAIN? This is FAR worse than trespassing right? I can’t say what direction this will go with all that much certainty, but the one thing that I AM sure of is that Daryl will definitely continue to stay by Carol’s side...romantic or otherwise.

[RECAP] Season 10, Episode 2 of The Walking Dead, "We are the End of the World"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

During the second episode of season 10 of The Walking Dead, entitled “We are the end of the world”, we slow down the pace considerably from the season premiere and focus in on only The Whisperers.  Specifically the dynamic and origin story of Alpha and Beta, as well as the introduction of Gamma (Welcome Thora Birch!).  Typically, I’m not a big fan of what are commonly known as “bottle episodes” where we don’t a get a chance to see most of our cast, however, in this particular case, the story is so enthralling that we do not even notice (or mind for that matter) the isolated tale.  This story is beyond just about the Whisperers but rather more about mothers and daughters and how the loss of a child can send a mother into an absolute tailspin, no matter how strong of a character.

The episode flashes back and forth between the present day state of business with the Whisperer and with a time period approximately (6) years in the past, when Alpha was on the run with a bigger Lydia (no longer a baby but seemingly about 10-11 years old at that point).  After witnessing a particular gruesome death (man, I’m so used to everyone being so martial by now that I forget that there were a lot of civilians completely ripped apart by walkers in the early stages of the apocalypse…DAMN), Alpha and Lydia seek refuge in what is apparently a mental institution guarded by a large formidable man with a large machete (who we have now become to know as Beta).  What follows is a negotiation by Alpha that convinces Beta to allow them to stay, for one night, before moving on to another location.  It’s in these memories, we see still a strong Alpha…but also one that undeniably loves her daughter.  We see a woman who gently bathes her daughter and carries around her toy bunny rabbit, while at the same time trying to convince her daughter that she needs to toughen up.  Lydia, being a child eager to please her mother, WANTS to toughen up and even tells her mother Alpha that she aspires to be strong like her.

Nothing pleases Alpha more.  However, in Lydia’s eager state, she proceeds to run off and face her fear of walkers inside the institution herself, covering herself in walker guts (the old trick).  This incites a frantic search in the building by Alpha, even after being warned by Beta not to overstep her bounds.  Eventually she stumbles across an office that has a photo of two gentlemen, each with their faces scratched off, one clearly has the stature of Beta and the other is a smaller man with a “Have a Nice Day” t-shirt.  It’s at this point that Beta comes in attacking Alpha who kills off the walker that stumbles in with the t-shirt on but all the carnage comes to an abrupt stop when Lydia surprisingly enters the room.

Alpha is deliriously happy that Lydia is alive and well (although she got a MAJOR talking down to for disappearing on her like that) but Beta is clearly crestfallen that this man has been put down (was he friend?  A son?  A coworker?).  Alpha ends up taking this opportunity to lure Beta toward her side, convincing him that they can all coexist together and survive among the dead (particularly since they were able to kill so many walkers together).  She seems to do a good job convincing him based on the fact that they are currently united, six years later, and with that he removes the man's shirt and face and voila!  Beta is born.

This all provides a critical backdrop and comparison point for the current state of affairs where Alpha and Beta now lead a pack and while Beta might’ve been doubtful of Alpha in the past, he now follows her without question.  But it’s during a “routine” day of trying to gather more walkers that we notice that one of the two females with him (who Alpha refers to as the “sisters”) is acting a little…off.  Through more flashbacks, we realize that this particular female Whisperer was the one who reluctantly laid down her baby in the field, as per Alpha’s orders, when they first confronted our heroes.  She seems to be dealing with a certain level of PTSD from that incident and in her state, she puts the pack at risk by effectively blowing their cover.  While Beta wants to murder this woman immediately upon returning to their site, Alpha has mercy on her, potentially because she can relate to the feelings involved with the loss of a child, from a mother to mother standpoint.

This mercy does not last long because when the pack is back at it trying to herd their walkers, they notice the fallen satellite streaking through the sky.  I appreciated this moment because it very clearly gave us as viewers a definitive idea of where we are in the timeline of events and we are clear that these events are occurring concurrently, while our heroes are experiencing their issues (and eventually battling the wildfires).  In any case, the noise of this satellite causes confusion among the walkers who start to scatter.  It’s at this point that this Whisperer female sees a walker stumbling around with a baby Bjorn stuck to its chest.  This moment causes the Whisperer female to have a complete mental breakdown and she removes her mask…and charges at Alpha, fully jumping on her back in the process.  But it’s at this point that rather than defend her sister, the other Whisperer sister pulls her off and essentially dumps her to the walkers, killing her instantly.

She cant say she didn’t warn her sister to control herself and self-preservation is a very real thing in this post-apocalyptic world.  But for this, she is rewarded by receiving a ranking and being anointed by Alpha as “Gamma”, something that seems to irk and rattle Beta.  Threatened much?  It literally feels like a child vying for his mother's attention and being incredibly jealous of having to share the spotlight with anyone else.

The major scene as far as I’m concerned however, is more toward the very end when Beta confronts Alpha in her secret area that very much resembles a nest (a bit literal in representation but understood).  It’s in this moment that we get a rare glimpse of the vulnerability and love that Alpha apparently STILL HAS for her daughter Lydia.  Beta seems to be stunned that Alpha did not kill Lydia the way everyone THINKS she did but Alpha tearfully retorts that she COULDN’T ever kill her because that was her BABY.  How could he expect her to kill her, she tearfully pleads from him?  All the while, clutching Lydia’s old toy bunny.  We witness her internal struggle, eventually spilling into the external, as she completely destroys her nest and all hope of having Lydia back underneath her wing.

By the end of the episode, Alpha resets herself and realigns with Beta to focus on the task at hand of making sure our heroes are clear on the parameters of their borders.  Particularly when she has her stare down with Carol at the very end of the episode (which also happens to be how we ended last week’s season premiere).

But now that Alpha’s vulnerability is exposed and known to at least Beta, how will that influence her decision making?  Can be Beta FULLY be trusted to not divulge or take advantage of Alpha’s weaknesses?  And is Gamma a true “believer” or merely a survivor looking to get by until a better opportunity presents itself (or an opportunity to overthrow Alpha presents itself)?

Only time will tell…

[RECAP] Season 10, Episode 1 of The Walking Dead, "Lines We Cross"

Why miss out? Subscribe to our blog via E-Mail!

Well, it’s October and it ‘tis the season Apple Picking, Pumpkin Spice and the scent of Fall and Halloween is in the air.  And it WOULDN’T be Halloween without a new season of The Walking Dead, just in the nick of time!  The season premiere of season 10 (this show has been on for TEN years now) aired Sunday night, slightly earlier than past season premieres which usually coincided closer with Halloween (akin to when the show first aired 2009).  But the question is, after 10 years of this zombie post apocalyptic drama being on the air, can this show still bring it?  Based on the first episode of the season, the answer seems to be YES.

The episode weaves several different storylines with the one connecting thread being what appears to be a sudden meteor shower, which turns out to be a Soviet Satellite that crashes back into the atmosphere (how trippy was it to see that random space shot of the satellite in orbit?  Part of me was waiting to see some space zombies but whatever).  After the initial shot of the satellite, we come to see that the rest of the episode is broken down into labeled segments including the following: Training Day, Bird Wisdom, Skin, Sea Dogs, New Mexico and Embers (to name a few) which allows us to view where some of our characters are, months after the horrific murders at the fair and the historical snow storm that shut down the Kingdom.
The first segment entitled “Training Day” illustrates what many of us thought was potentially an epic showdown, based on the trailers released.  Instead, this Oceanside Army with melee weapons and armored shields is all part of a very elaborate training session at the Oceanside community.  By the way, is it just me or are these water logged walkers the absolute grossest/coolest things ever?  In any case, we get to see the very elaborate battle tactics that our heroes have developed that end up coming to good use when the walker onslaught gets a little out of hand.  We get some really great fight scenes throughout the whole episode and this scene is no different.  It’s also during this segment that Judith and RJ uncover something that many haven’t seen in some time...a Whisperer mask.

This leads to a heightened sense of alert to everyone that has not been felt in some time.  Aaron, Daryl and Michonne quickly radio back to Alexandria about the found mask in order to make them aware.

It’s in this moment that we get to see some of what’s been going on at Alexandria including the 3 Men and a Baby dynamic that is Eugene (also known as Eugenius, BRILLIANT), Siddiq and Father Gabriel in respect to Rosita’s baby.  Eugene seems to be the baby’s primary caregiver/pediatrician while Rosita seems to get out quite a bit of pent up anger on a boxing bag (or just working on a getting rid of the baby weight because that really does help, trust me).  More disturbing however is Siddiq’s mental state, because as we notice during his one and one moments with his baby daughter,  he is clearly suffering with some PTSD from his harrowing ordeal with Alpha and the Whisperers, where he essentially had to witness so many of his loved ones brutally murdered before his eyes.

We also get to meet a NEW character: Dante!  In this episode, he appears to be another medic who is assisting Siddiq, but much more confident and with quite a bit more “swagger”.  This is very much in line with the Dante character in the comic (as comic readers are WELL familiar with).

And speaking of swagger, we do see the return of Negan, now with more “relaxed” prison terms that allows him to work the gardening grounds and even interact with Lydia who is spending her time at Alexandria learning how to read as well as train.
But without a doubt, the appearance of Carol, returning triumphantly on a boat, to dock at Oceanside was one of the most highly anticipated moments.  It’s also with a tinge of sadness that we see King Ezekiel’s wistful, hopeful reaction at seeing her again...and her dismissal of him to run into the arms of her friend Daryl.  ALSO: Let’s be clear now.  These two are close personal FRIENDS and nothing more.  This is evident by the pamphlet of American Sign Language tucked into the back of Daryl’s pants (looks like Connie has Daryl on her hook, get it?).

With that being said, we do get some close conversations between these two pivotal characters, contemplating what’s really the point of all this.  Carol seems to want to just run away from everything (including the pain of losing her son to Alpha) and when Daryl says that the pirate life isn’t for him, she suggests that they just ride off on his bike and keep going west.  Daryl actually considers this until their conversation is broken by the main them of the episode: the crashing satellite.
This causes all our heroes at Oceanside to react to fall out from the satellite crash which is an extensive wildfire.  Everyone immediately reacts with water buckets and axes and weapons to try and control the fire, by an means necessary.  Eventually the fire is diminished and everyone works to collect themselves and get back to camp, since they had to stumble into Whisperer terrority, while they reacted to the wildfire (something Carol is very incensed about, since she doesn’t understand why there should be any respecting of Alpha’s rules).  Before they all leave, Eugene and some of the others work to extract valuable equipment from the crashed satellite and Daryl and Carol step away again for a moment.

In our final scene, these two stand overlooking a quarry and woods with Daryl imploring Carol to STAY rather than run away again on a boat for months.  Carol stays quiet and thinks about it....and it’s at that moment that we see Alpha come out of her area in the quarry out in the open and it’s then that these two fierce women make eye contact with each other, fearlessly and with all the anger in the world.  Two vengeful, angry mothers.  OH IT IS ON.

For a season premiere of a show that is on its tenth season, this was a strong forward step into this new stage for The Walking Dead.  Will it really be Carol who gets to have the pleasure of taking out Alpha?  How much will the setting of the ocean play into the season’s storyline?  Will Michonne’s eventual show exit be via a boat?  All in all though, it was very action packed episode that got the viewers very quickly caught up with where all our heroes are and where they likely will be going as this conflict continues (all within an hour, might I add).  Based on what we saw Sunday night, it looks like it’ll be quite a ride.

RATING: 4/5
